Japan Sends Tech Demo Satellite into Space
The RAISE-4 satellite lifted off Sunday from New Zealand's Launch Complex 1, carried by an Electron rocket operated by American aerospace company Rocket Lab, JAXA announced in an official release.
Development of the spacecraft involved collaboration across Japan's aerospace sector, bringing together private industry partners, academic institutions, and scientific research organizations.
Peter Beck, founder and CEO of Rocket Lab, emphasized the mission's significance: "This dedicated mission delivered precision and reliability for one of the world's most respected space agencies, and we couldn't be prouder of supporting JAXA with the dedicated access to space needed to support the growth of Japan's aerospace economy."
The launch represents a strategic shift for JAXA's technology demonstration program. Japan previously relied on its domestically-produced Epsilon small-class rockets for similar satellite deployments, but that launch vehicle experienced a catastrophic failure in 2023.
By turning to Rocket Lab's proven launch capabilities, JAXA has secured reliable orbital access for advancing Japan's space technology development and commercial aerospace ambitions.
